Program Costs
• Less than half the cost of prison
• In an Iowa state prison system 408 clients admitted to the Jail-Based Substance Abuse Treatment Program between July 1,2004 and June 30, 2005,
• On average the daily cost of the program was $30.19 per client in the Jail Treatment Program, compared to $64.02 per prisoner per day to house an inmate in the Iowa State Prison
• In California, State spending on corrections has quadrupled over the past 20 years ($52 billion annually)
• New programs and policies for inmates and ex-cons could eliminate the need for as many as 48,000 prison beds, effectively saving California taxpayers $561 to $684 million per year.
• While these programs are effective, we do not have enough rehabilitation available
• The cost to incarcerate one inmate is an estimated $65,000/ year well above the average median U.S. income
